A United States destroyer sailed within 12 miles of a disputed island in the South China Sea. As a result, Chinese fighter jets were scrambled in order to “expel” the guided missile destroyer. The island, dubbed Fiery Cross Reef, is claimed by several Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan. United Nations rulings say that a nation’s jurisdiction of an island only extends 12 nautical miles off of its coast. United States officials contend that their naval fleets will sail wherever international law allows, and that they were not in violation of Chinese territory when they came close to Fiery Cross Reef.
JON STEWART ON DONALD TRUMP
With Donald Trump in the presidential race, late night talk shows have been having a field day with the candidate. People such as Trevor Noah, Jimmy Fallon, and Stephen Colbert have been ripping into Trump, but one voice has been conspicuously absent from the barrage of insults...until now. Jon Stewart, former host of the Daily Show, spoke out on the Republican presidential nominee, calling him a veritable “man-baby”. He went on to say that Trump’s “politically incorrect” rhetoric was misguided, and that if he wanted a debate like that he should tell voters that "the problems in this country are not because of Mexicans and Muslims."
STEPHEN CURRY WINS UNANIMOUS NBA MVP
The NBA record for wins. Most three-pointers made in a season. On the road to a repeat championship. The Golden State Warriors have been taking the NBA by storm in the 2015-2016 season, and no one has been more prevalent than number 30, Stephen Curry. The point guard made over 400 3’s this season and came back from an injury yesterday, scoring 40 points to help the Warriors overcome the Portland Trailblazers and gain a 3-1 lead in the series. He won the unanimous MVP vote, the first time in NBA history that a player has achieved this honor.
OXYGEN ON MARS
Astronomers have discovered atomic oxygen in Mars’ mesosphere. The discovery of oxygen can help researchers to understand how gases escape Mars’ atmosphere, as well as the idea of atmospheric erosion. Despite earlier attempts to uncover oxygen on the Red Planet in the 1970s, the wavelengths associated with it were not measured accurately. The discovery was made using a jet known as Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, a 747SP jet, specifically created for research purposes.
