SAN JOSE BACK IN THE RUNNING FOR A HIGH-SPEED RAIL LINK

Officials in California are reconsidering a 2012 decision to build the first segment of a high-speed rail network from Burbank north into the Central Valley. Officials are studying the possibility of bringing the first stretch of track north to San Jose instead. The alternative being examined would run from Silicon Valley to Bakersfield and be less expensive than the current proposal since it would not involve tunneling costs. The first phase of construction started in Fresno in July; two-and-a-half years behind schedule. The outcome of the new evaluation will be known in the coming weeks, when the state unveils its 2016 business plan.
