U.S. JOBLESS CLAIMS RISE

U.S. stocks finished with gains for the day in a volatile session. The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment benefits rose last week as employers continued to adjust staffing following the holiday break. Jobless claims climbed by 8,000 to 285,000 in the week ended January 30th, from a revised 277,000 in the prior period. The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits fell by 18,000 to 2.26 mn in the week ended January 23rd.

U.S. FACTORY ORDERS DECLINE IN DECEMBER

Orders to U.S. factories fell sharply in December, thus indicating a year in which demand for American manufactured goods retreated for the first time in six years. Factory orders dropped 2.9% in December, the fourth decline in the past five months. Orders were down 6.6% for the full year. The big decline was led by a plunge in demand for commercial aircraft; a volatile category. Orders for durable goods, items intended to last at least three years such as cars and home appliances, declined 5% in December.​

HONDA TO RECALL 2.2. MN VEHICLES IN THE U.S. FOR AIRBAGS

Honda is recalling another 2.2 mn vehicles in the U.S. because of air bags made by Takata that could explode. The latest round of recalls involves more than 50 mn vehicles globally. The recalled vehicles include newer model years, up to 2016. They include certain cars from the 2009-2014 Fit, 2007-2014 Ridgeline and 2007-2016 Acura RDX.

WALMART TO OPERATE ITS OWN GAS STATIONS

Retail giant Walmart will build & operate its own gas stations. For the last 20 years, Walmart Stores Inc. has let Murphy USA build & operate gas stations in the parking lots of its stores. The move is a sign that the retailer is looking at alternate streams of earning revenue. Walmart is looking at selling gasoline as a way to lure more shoppers to stores so that they buy other, higher margin items in the main store.
