UTILITY RATES SET TO RISE IN PALO ALTO

Electricity, gas, water and wastewater rates all set to go up at the same time in Palo Alto. Electricity rates in the city are set to rise for the first time since 2009. The increase could be in the range of 10-12% or higher. Altogether, the rate changes are expected to add about 9% to the median residential utility bill, or about $23.25 per month. As of last July, the median residential bill in Palo Alto was $245.23.​ Palo Alto usually draws about hallf of its electricity load from hydroelectric sources. The ongoing drought means that the city has to buy its electricity from elsewhere thus increasing costs.

HILLARY CLINTON LOSING HER NATIONAL LEAD OVER BERNIE SANDERS: POLL

Hillary Clinton’s strong national lead over Sanders has shrunk & the Democratic race is incredibly close according to a a national Quinnipiac Poll. Hillary Clinton received 44% of support while Sanders received 42%; his highest support in any national poll to date. This new poll was conducted after the Iowa caucuses, when the polls were too close to call on Monday night. The last Quinnipiac poll released on December 21st showed Clinton leading with a whopping 31 points over Sanders.

PUERTO RICO DECLARES EMERGENCY OVER ZIKA VIRUS OUTBREAK

Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing Zika virus outbreak. The U.S. territory has at least 22 people who have been reported to have been infected. The State Emergency and Disaster Administration is creating a task force for both federal and state officials to deal with the crisis. The Government has ordered a price freeze has been ordered for products needed to prevent the disease.

15 INJURED AS EARTHQUAKE STRIKES NEPAL

A moderate quake measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Nepal's capital and its tourist hub Pokhra. Fifteen people were injured in Kathmandu as people ran away from their houses in panic during the tremor. The quake's epicentre was in Sindhupalchowk district, near Tibet border. The tremors of the earthquake was felt in some areas of northern Bihar.
