INDIA MONSOON DEATH TOLL RISES

The monsoon season in India is intensifying. Despite the positive tidings that rain brings in a dry year for the subcontinent, what comes with it does not bode well. The storms grew stronger and with them came copious lightning and thunder. Unfortunately, 90 people in India were struck by lightning and died as a result. A breakdown of the deaths by state shows that Uttar Pradesh had 17 casualties, Jharkhand had 10, Madhya Pradesh had 6, and Bihar led the count with a record 57 casualties. Death by lightning is not as uncommon in India as one would think. It is the subcontinent’s leading cause of death, with 2,582 deaths in 2014 due to lightning strikes.
