JUDGEMENT DAY: BREXIT
Among the drama in Congress, it is easy to forget that Britain is casting a historic vote in a controversial referendum today. The Brexit initiative, should it pass, would allow Britain to leave the European Union and become a sovereign state. Despite Prime Minister David Cameron’s attempts to keep the country together by obtaining special exceptions for British citizens from certain restrictions placed by the EU, a large part of the country still wishes to depart. As the country mobilized to vote, conditions were as British as ever, with massive downpours making it difficult for voters to reach polling stations. The turnout was such that some schools suspended education for the day and opened themselves up as polling stations. The country is sharply split down the middle, and whatever happens next could shape both Britain and the world for decades to come.
