Disgusting. That is the only way to describe what happened to a now deceased 14 year old Dalit girl. In December, the girl, who remains unnamed, was kidnapped by her attacker and raped. Her parents filed a report with senior Delhi police officers, and the man was eventually caught and imprisoned. However, he was later let out on bail while awaiting trial. In May, the same man kidnapped the same girl once again, forcing her to drink chemicals while he raped her. She died in the hospital in June after falling sick. This case is just one of the many brutal deaths associated with rape in India and around the world. India’s National Crime Records Bureau shows that more than four Dalit women are raped every day. Sunitha Krishnan, a rape survivor, activist and mental health specialist, says that the lower caste suffers this kind of oppression more often than the other classes and it is a problem that needs to be stopped.
