ALL WOMEN ENTITLED TO SAFE AND LEGAL ABORTION
In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that marital status of a woman cannot be a ground to deprive her of the right to abort an unwanted pregnancy. The top court said that even a single and unmarried woman has the right to abort under Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and the rules, till 24 weeks of pregnancy.
The court on also said that that law cannot be static and should be evolved with changing times, adding that non-traditional relationships, like live-in, should be recognised under the law. A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said the exclusion of unmarried women, who conceive out of live-in relationship, from the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Rules is unconstitutional.
