PARIS INAUGURATES GIANT WATER SHORTAGE BASIN TO CLEAN UP THE RIVER SEINE FOR OLYMPIC SWIMMING
The inauguration of a massive water storage basin near the River Seine in Paris marks a significant step in efforts to improve water quality ahead of the Paris Games. The basin, located next to the Austerlitz train station, has been designed to collect excess rainwater and prevent untreated sewage from entering the river. Last year, concerns over water quality led to the cancellation of swimming test events, highlighting the urgent need for improvements. The new reservoir has the capacity to hold a substantial amount of dirty water, equivalent to 20 Olympic swimming pools, which will undergo treatment before being released into the river.
French officials, including Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, have emphasized the importance of providing athletes with a safe and clean environment for their events. The completion of this infrastructure project underscores Paris' commitment to hosting successful and environmentally responsible sporting events.
