SOUTH BAY BART EXTENSION FACES ANOTHER COST INCREASE
The VTA's ambitious project to extend BART into downtown San Jose and Santa Clara is facing yet another setback, with cost estimates soaring to $12.75 billion, significantly higher than the original projection. This latest increase, amounting to $517 million over previous estimates.
The VTA needs to adjust its hard construction cost figures by an additional $600 million. While the overall estimate includes a potential $83 million reduction in financing costs, the substantial increase in construction expenses poses a significant challenge for the project's budget. With the cost now exceeding two and a half times the original target, taxpayers are facing mounting concerns about the feasibility and financial viability of the BART extension. This latest development underscores the complexities and uncertainties involved in large-scale infrastructure projects and underscores the need for careful planning and oversight to ensure successful completion within budget and timeline constraints.
