KAMAL NATH STEPS DOWN

Kamal Nath was the general secretary of the Congress Party and as such, is an influential figure in the party. However, due to his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Nath tendered his resignation. In a letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, Nath asserted that he did not want the controversy surrounding him to divert attention from the issues facing Punjab. Congress has received criticism for appointing Nath as general secretary. Nath retaliated by saying he had already under investigation and had been cleared of all charges. He went on to say that the accusations are nothing but a cheap political trick in order to topple Congress.
