You donate some money to a candidate you support. You get an email back thanking you for donation. Some weeks later, your candidate drops out and you get an email from the leading candidate asking for a donation. How did your email end up on another candidate’s email list? After a candidate drops out of the race, they sell their supporters’ information to data brokers, who then sell that information onto another candidate. Bob Biersack, a former FEC official and now a senior fellow at the Center for Responsive Politics, said that it was hard to track down exactly who is selling this information, as there is no record of a direct payment to any one entity. By far, the largest benefactor from these sales is Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who has made over half a million dollars selling supporter information.
