TURKEY FACES MILITARY OVERHAUL

A military coup took place in Turkey a few weeks back. While the coup itself failed, President Tayyip Erdogan felt it exposed weak links in the Turkish military. As a result, more than a third of the military was arrested in a nationwide spree of arrests. Erdogan replaced more than 60,000 employees in all governmental offices, and filled the military council with ministers from his cabinet, giving the president full control of the military. The mass expulsion of officers raised concerns with Turkey’s NATO allies who felt that the reaction was driven by paranoia.
