AN OVERCROWDED JAIL

Just across from a library and by a police station, stands a jail. The jail does not look very large, but its outward appearance belies the density of its inside population. This prison is one of the most overcrowded prisons on Earth. Built to house 800 prisoners, with a UN recommendation of 270 inmates, this Quezon City prison houses over 4000 inmates and counting. The number has continued to spike with the Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte’s desire to clean up his country. Even more astounding than the sheer volume of prisoners is the lack of guards. There are just 20 per shift.
