California’s high‑speed rail (HSR) project, approved by voters in 2008, has struggled with cost overruns and delays—and is now confronting a major setback in its push toward the Bay Area.
As of mid‑2025, 171 miles of infrastructure in the Central Valley—between Merced and Bakersfield—are under active construction, but no high‑speed track has yet been laid. While the Central Valley segment is being built and progress toward track laying is described as impending, the Bay Area connection remains contingent on billions of dollars in new funding and federal support.
