The U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle ship will visit San Francisco and offer free public tours from Friday through Sunday. The Eagle plans to moor at Pier 17 near the Exploratorium museum as the ninth port of the Eagle's 14-week journey along the West Coast.
The Eagle was originally constructed in Hamburg, Germany in 1936 as a German Navy vessel. It was given to the U.S. as a war reparation following World War II. Today, the Eagle serves as a classroom and leadership training site at sea as a part of the Coast Guard Academy's curriculum as well as a goodwill ambassador for the United States and Coast Guard.
