CSU SYSTEM ENROLLMENT DECLINED BY OVER 6% FROM 2019 TO 2023
The California State University (CSU) system has experienced a significant decline in enrollment, with numbers dropping by over 6% from 2019 to 2023, indicating ongoing effects from the pandemic. Several CSU campuses in the Bay Area have been impacted, although some are showing signs of improvement. San Francisco State University (SFSU) has seen a particularly steep decline, with enrollment dropping by about 20% since 2019.
SFSU President Lynn Mahoney attributes the decline to various factors, including the initial impact of the pandemic in 2020 when the campus transitioned to remote learning. Subsequent years also saw challenges, including declines in community college transfer enrollments and fewer international students.
