FORMER PATRIOTS OC BILL O'BRIEN NEARING DEAL TO BECOME BOSTON COLLEGE HEAD COACH
Bill O'Brien, the former offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, is poised to make a return to the region, but not with the Patriots. He is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach at Boston College. Bill O'Brien, a Massachusetts native, is poised to return to his home state after joining the Ohio State coaching staff in January as the offensive coordinator under head coach Ryan Day. O'Brien boasts a diverse coaching background spanning both the NFL and NCAA ranks. He began his coaching career with a two-year stint at Brown University before assuming various offensive roles with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2011. O'Brien then served as the head coach at Penn State in 2012 and 2013 before being hired as the head coach of the Houston Texans in 2014. Following his tenure with the Texans, where he was relieved of his duties four games into the 2020 season, O'Brien transitioned back to college football and served as the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide under Nick Saban for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
O'Brien briefly returned to the Patriots in January 2023, but his reunion with the team coincided with a challenging season. Despite the efforts of quarterbacks Mac Jones and later Bailey Zappe, the Patriots struggled offensively, finishing tied for last in the NFL in scoring with an average of just 13.9 points per game during a 4-13 regular season.
Meanwhile, Boston College, under the leadership of head coach Jeff Hafley, achieved a 7-6 record and secured a victory in the Fenway Bowl in 2023. However, Hafley departed to become the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator on January 31, leaving a vacancy that O'Brien is set to fill as the next head coach of the Eagles.
