HOSPICE EAST BAY WORKERS BEGIN 7-DAY STRIKE AMID CONTRACT DISPUTE

About 70 Hospice East Bay workers are beginning a seven-day strike Monday as they fight for a new contract. The caregivers, including nurses, chaplains and bereavement counselors, are striking to bring attention to what their union says is a staffing problem at the nonprofit, which provides end-of-life care for patients in the East Bay.

The union says the new Florida-based owner of Hospice East Bay has stalled negotiations for what would be the union's first contract. Workers also say Hospice East Bay has already laid off some employees and plans to lay off more.
