ICELAND BUILDS DEFENCES FOR A FUTURE OF INCREASED VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

Icelanders are tirelessly constructing dykes, towering as tall as three-storey buildings, to shield a critical power plant and residences from lava streams. This urgent effort stems from the reawakening of volcanoes near the capital city of Reykjavik, which had lain dormant for nearly 800 years.

These six volcanic systems, predicted by experts to remain active for as long as three centuries, extend beneath Iceland's southwestern Reykjanes peninsula. This area is inhabited by approximately 30,000 people, accounting for nearly 8% of the country's total population.
