In the name of privacy, the city of Mountain View is turning off its license plate-reading cameras despite the impact that they have on crime. The vote for Mountain View to end its contract with Flock Safety was unanimous despite the fact that supporters said the cameras were lowering crime.
The privacy concerns have always been a part of the conversation, but they came to a head at the end of January when Mountain View police found that Flock Safety enabled a search setting without authorization. The search setting allowed access to at least four different federal law enforcement. The city has 30 license plate-reading cameras.
