This week's storm has led to the most outages experienced by the utility in nearly 30 years, impacting over 1.4 million customers since Sunday across its service area. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, over 12,000 customers in the Bay Area were still without power. The North Bay bore the brunt of the outages, with more than 8,100 customers affected, according to PG&E. The surge in outages coincided with another bout of rain and wind sweeping through the region, depositing over a half-inch of rain in certain parts of the Bay Area since Wednesday morning.
As the atmospheric river swept through the region, Sunday marked the highest number of outages in a single day since the start of PG&E's modern period of recording outages in 1995. During the past few days, the storm has caused the breaking or toppling of over 700 PG&E power poles and inflicted damage on hundreds of transformers, as reported by the utility. To address the extensive outages, PG&E has mobilized approximately 5,000 employees and contractors who are diligently working to restore power to affected areas.
