US AND JAPAN ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO ACCELERATE NUCLEAR FUSION

The United States and Japan have announced a collaborative partnership aimed at accelerating the development and commercialization of nuclear fusion. This joint effort was revealed during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington. U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk and Japan's Minister of Education, Sports, Science, and Technology, Masahito Moriyama, convened in Washington to discuss fusion on Tuesday. The partnership intends to address the scientific and technical obstacles to achieving commercial fusion, with a particular focus on fostering collaboration among universities, national laboratories, and private companies in both countries.

Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun, has long been pursued as a potential source of carbon-free electricity. Scientists and entities worldwide have endeavored to replicate fusion on Earth using various methods involving heat, pressure, lasers, or magnets to fuse light atoms into denser ones, thereby releasing significant energy. The collaborative efforts between the United States and Japan aim to advance fusion research and move closer to realizing its potential as a sustainable energy source.
