Chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar will on December 3 take up chairship of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IIDEA) for the year 2026 in Stockholm, reflecting a “global recognition of the Election Commission’s standing as one of the world’s most credible and innovative election management bodies (EMBs),” as per EC.

IIDEA is an intergovernmental organisation created in February 1995, with India as a founding member, to support sustainable democracy worldwide. It has, over the past three decades, evolved into a key global convenor for EMBs, constitutional experts, political institutions and democratic practitioners from across continents.
