The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched its new electronic tax-filing system, Direct File, in 12 states after weeks of testing. Direct File is an in-house online filing tool designed to simplify the tax-filing process for taxpayers. The IRS plans to expand this system nationwide in the future.IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel highlighted the agency's efforts to improve operations and make tax preparation easier for taxpayers. Direct File is available to taxpayers in selected states with simple tax situations, such as those with W-2 forms and standard deductions for federal income taxes. However, taxpayers filing state taxes will need to use separate state-specific tools, as Direct File only covers federal tax returns.

It's important to note that Direct File differs from the existing Free File program, which offers free tax filing through participating software for taxpayers with incomes below $79,000. Direct File is accessible to taxpayers of all income levels.
