NEW CALIFORNIA BILL WOULD BOOST HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE PROTECTIONS

There's a potential lifeline for California homeowners grappling with increasing insurance expenses: Lawmakers are mulling over a new legislation aimed at enhancing protections. State Senator Josh Becker, a Democrat representing Menlo Park, has introduced a bill designed to compel insurance companies to take into account the substantial investments made by the state in wildfire mitigation efforts, as well as the measures taken by homeowners themselves to safeguard their properties against wildfires, such as establishing defensible space around their homes.

According to Becker, insurance companies currently fail to factor in these crucial elements when determining insurance coverage and associated costs for homeowners. Senate Bill 1060 seeks to address this issue by mandating insurers to consider these factors. Notably, the bill does not mandate insurers to provide any form of discount; rather, it simply requires them to acknowledge the efforts made to enhance property protection.
