UAW VOLKSWAGEN TENNESSEE PLANT VOTE
A Volkswagen plant situated near dense forests and Interstate 75 on the southern border of Tennessee has become a focal point in the ongoing battle over worker representation, with potential ramifications for the future of the American auto industry. The United Auto Workers (UAW) is making its third attempt to organize the 4,300 eligible workers in Chattanooga, where VW manufactures the ID.4 electric SUV. The voting process at VW's only nonunion plant globally is set to commence on Wednesday and conclude late on Friday.
For the UAW, which has seen a decline in membership, the VW vote represents a significant opportunity to expand its presence beyond traditional Detroit-owned automakers and into the U.S. South, an area historically resistant to organized labor. Another potential battleground is the Mercedes-Benz factory in Vance, Alabama, where a vote may occur in the near future.
