SAN JOSE EXPECTS SUPER BOWL EXPENSES TO BE EXCEEDED BY VISITOR-GENERATED TAX REVENUES

The upcoming Super Bowl means higher expenses for public safety activities and sprucing up downtown San Jose. However the city expects that additional visitor-generated tax receipts and other game-related revenues will more than cover the expenditure according to a new report issued yesterday. Additional sales tax, parking, other hotel taxes and airport-related revenues will boost the city’s bottom line according to the report. However no estimated figures have been put out for the same. The NFL will reimburse the City of Santa Clara for its $3.6 mn in expenses for hosting the game itself.

SARAH PALIN ENDORSES DONALD TRUMP

Former Alaska Governor and 2008 Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump in his bid to become the next U.S. President. Palin's endorsement came at Trump's rally in Iowa yesterday and gives him a big boost with just 13 days left for the state’s caucuses. Her support is the highest-profile backing for a Republican so far. The endorsement of Trump puts Palin back in the center of the media spotlight and allows her to remodel her political image.

GUNMEN STORM UNIVERSITY IN PAKISTAN, KILL AT LEAST 20 PEOPLE

Gunmen slipped into a college campus under the cover of fog and killed at least 20 people in another deadly attack on students in Pakistan. The latest attack is a revenge for expanding military crackdowns against the Taliban. A Taliban faction claimed responsibility for the attack in Charsadda, about 30 miles from Peshawar. Four suspected attackers were also killed in yesterday’s bloodshed. According to eyewitness reports in The Washington Post, many of the university students were shot in the head.

CHINA'S TWITTER ENDS 140-CHARACTER LIMIT

China's most popular micro-blogging platform, Sina Weibo is dropping its cap on the number of letters, numbers and symbols its members can write in a single post. The social network which is referred to as China's version of Twitter had been defined by its 140-character limit. During a pilot phase, only the first 140 characters will be shown to readers up front and they would have to click on a link to see the contents of longer messages. Sina Corp's Weibo service has more than 200 mn users; a 100 mn fewer than Twitter.
