AFTER INDIA'S FIRST UNDERSEA TUNNEL, MUMBAI WILL GET ITS LONGEST INTRA-CITY UNDERGROUND ROAD
The Coastal Road tunnel marks a significant milestone as India's inaugural undersea tunnel, crafted utilizing a 12-meter diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) procured from China amidst the pandemic. While achieving groundbreaking construction feats, the project also grappled with delays due to COVID-19-related disruptions. Presently, the TBM, disassembled, awaits its forthcoming task: crafting a tunnel connecting Orange Gate on the Freeway to the Marine Drive terminus of the Coastal Road.
Spanning over 9 kilometers, this tunnel is poised to become the lengthiest subterranean roadway within a city's confines across the nation. Mirroring the Coastal Road tunnel, it will adopt a dual-tube construction approach, complemented by viaducts and contemporary safety protocols.
