CARBON EMISSIONS FROM ALUMINIUM SECTOR DIP DESPITE OUTPUT GROWTH

The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) announced on Wednesday that greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminium sector have been declining in recent years, despite an increase in production. The industry has achieved this reduction by adopting less carbon-intensive technologies and increasing recycling efforts. According to the IAI, emissions from the aluminium industry decreased to 1.11 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2022, down from 1.13 billion in the previous year. This reduction occurred despite a 3.9% increase in production. The shift towards using hydropower in China, the world's top aluminium producer, played a significant role in driving down emissions, along with the adoption of more renewable energy sources in other regions.

Aluminium is widely utilized in various sectors such as transportation, packaging, and construction. However, its production process is highly energy-intensive, requiring substantial amounts of electricity. Despite these challenges, the industry's efforts to reduce emissions demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
