Across the Bay Area on Tuesday night, neighborhoods traded flashing lights for block parties as communities gathered with first responders for National Night Out. The annual event is designed to strengthen relationships between residents and the people sworn to protect them. Millions of Americans celebrated with block parties, barbecues, and face-to-face conversations with police officers, firefighters, and other first responders.
In Fremont, it also marked Police Chief Floyd Mitchell's first National Night Out since taking over the department earlier this year. City leaders spent the evening moving from neighborhood to neighborhood, hearing directly from residents about the issues affecting their daily lives. For Mitchell, who has led the Fremont Police Department for five months, the evening wasn't just about shaking hands; it was about listening. As he visited neighborhood gatherings across Fremont, residents raised concerns about public safety, traffic, and homelessness. The chief said those conversations are just as important as responding to 911 calls.
