GOV. NEWSOM DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNTIES DUE TO STORM
Governor Gavin Newsom's office declared a state of emergency on Sunday for several Southern California counties in the path of a potent storm expected to bring continuous rain until Monday. The affected counties include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. "This is a serious storm with dangerous and potentially life-threatening impacts," Governor Newsom stated. "Please pay attention to any emergency orders or alerts from local officials. California is ready with a record number of emergency assets on the ground to respond to the impacts of this storm."
The proclamation enables a response by the California National Guard, if required, and facilitates out-of-state contractors and utilities to address storm-related damage.
Powered by an atmospheric river over the Pacific Ocean, the storm is drawing in significant moisture as it approaches Southern California. Steady rain is expected through the night and into Monday. Flood watches and warnings are in place for certain areas, with communities near burn scars and flood- and slide-prone regions under evacuation warnings and orders.
