JAPAN TAKES TAIWAN'S HELPING HAND ON LONG HAND TO CHIP REVIVAL

NEWS Desk Global

TSMC's (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) inauguration of its first plant in Japan on Saturday underscores its pivotal role in Tokyo's efforts to revitalize its semiconductor manufacturing industry. The decision by Japan to seek assistance from TSMC, a company based in Taiwan, once again highlights the latter's dominance in the foundry business. It also reflects Japan's growing concerns over China's expanding capabilities in various technology sectors.

The establishment of TSMC's presence in Japan is expected to stimulate investment throughout the semiconductor industry, which is considered crucial for economic security. Despite this collaboration with TSMC, the Japanese government is also focused on nurturing its own semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. This includes supporting initiatives like Rapidus, a domestic foundry venture, as part of its broader strategy to enhance technological independence and competitiveness.
