Morocco’s central bank—Bank Al‑Maghrib—is actively exploring the launch of its own central bank digital currency (CBDC). According to Governor Abdellatif Jouahri, the initiative aims to support peer‑to‑peer and cross‑border payments. Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies, a CBDC would be fully issued and controlled by the central bank.

The central bank sees potential for a digital dirham to better serve public policy goals—particularly reducing remittance costs, improving payment efficiency, and enhancing inclusion for underserved populations.
