The San Jose Sharks are staying in the South Bay – at least for the next quarter-century. The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to renovate SAP Center, which is owned by the city, as part of an extension deal for the National Hockey League team.

The city agreed to pay the lion's share of the total cost, an estimated $425 million. The Sharks showed some renderings of the planned makeover at the 32-year-old facility that still has to be approved. The team says the improvements include maintenance and infrastructure updates to SAP Center's elevators, restrooms, plumbing, WiFi network, sound system, electrical, fire protection system and emergency generators.
